Williams: Oldest Photo in Collection

Updated 8/27/2013:  All of the pictures can be found at https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/105520545719890010437/albums/5916827123719714305

The oldest photo in the collection is of Alta's great-great grandparents, Jeremiah and Mary (Ewart) Williams.
(NOTE:  The Williams do not yet appear on Altia Staley's pedigree.  They are the grand parents of Alonzo Boyers.  8/9/2013)

Jeremiah and Mary (Ewart) Williams
The Williams were from Kentucky and were among the first settlers in the New Martinsville, WV area. According to Bernard Staley, they were slave holders in KY and brought at least one slave with them to western Virginia.  West Virginia became a free state during the Civil War and the Williams family traveled between KY and WV during this time.  William and Mary had children that inherited land in WV and made homes in Wetzel county.

William and Mary are buried at Williams cemetery in New Martinsville, WV.  The Williams Cemetery website lists the following data for them:

Williams, Jeremiah

Feb 14,1761

Feb 6,1845

PfC in Capt. J. McFarland's Co- Rev. War

Williams, Mary

1776

1867

w/o Jeremiah Williams

An ex-slave of the Williams Family is reported to be buried in this cemetery, as well.

(NOTE:  I wonder if this photo is a later copy taken from an earlier photo.  There are two copies of the photo framed in the same manner in the collection.  Also, my brief internet research found that few photos survived from before the Civil War due to paper printing photo techniques used.  JSC)

James Yoho and Francis Yoho

Updated 8/27/2013:  All of the pictures can be found at https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/105520545719890010437/albums/5916827123719714305

For me, the story of the Staley Family starts with my great grandparents, Altia (Alta) Yoho Staley and Cecil Staley. Grandmother Alta was born in 1904 at her family house.  The house was located in a small valley called Fluharty Run, or Minnie, in Wetzel County, West Virginia. The house she was born in is gone, but the house that I used to stay at while I visited her and Grandad Cec still stands. This summer, while visiting Alta's son, Bernard (my grandfather), we of looked over a lock box full of family photos that date back to the 1800s. I volunteered to scan and publish, both to share and preserve our family history. I am starting at the beginning, for me, but it is really the middle of Alta's story. If you look at the pedigree for Alta Staley, you'll see her ancestors can be traced back about three generations.  And I am three generations in her future; in my mind that makes her the ideal person to center the family story around.

There were no pictures of Alta as a child in the box.  Photos of her parents and older sister are below.

To the right are Alta's parents, James, known as Pap and Frances, called Fannie.  Alta's older sister, Armena, nicknamed Mena,  is the little girl in the middle.

According to Bernard Staley, Pap's loved horses; Fannie was quiet but clearly the person in charge of the household.  Pap and Fannie had three children: Armena, Alta and Donal.
